They seem to prefer sunny places in which to create these dust baths. They then wriggle about in the indentations they have created, flapping their wings and ruffling their feathers, causing dust to rise in the air. A group of quail will select an area where the ground has been newly turned or is soft, and using their underbellies, will burrow downward into the soil some 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in). One of their daily communal activities is a dust bath. Remember, you’re not allowed to shoot off or across a public road.California quail are highly sociable birds that often gather in small flocks known as "coveys". Flush the birds off the road and let your dog work the singles although a dog isn’t necessary to be successful. One hunting method that is effective is to drive the dirt roads early in the morning, which is when the quail will be out on the roads getting gravel. Quail will usually be found near water and along the many spur roads that dot the national forest. Some of the more popular areas are Snow Mountain, Lake Pillsbury, Hull Mountain, Mendocino Pass, Elk and Pine mountains as well as Etsel Ridge. The Mendocino National Forest offers the best chance to bag both species pf quail and they can be found in good numbers throughout the forest. Most of them are taken by accident by hunters who are after California quail. In fact, it’s rare for a hunter to hunt solely for mountain quail. This habit of running instead of flying makes mountain quail a frustrating quarry for hunters. During the migration they usually walk instead of fly. Some mountain quail have been known to migrate more than 50 miles. They will stay at these high elevations until snow forces them to migrate to the foothills. Mountain quail are found in the higher and more remote areas of the national forest. The males and females closely resemble each other and can be identified by a long and slender erect plume feather on the head. Unlike their California quail cousins, mountain quail have much smaller coveys, averaging from six to eight birds, and they are much larger, averaging 8-10 ounces. The other quail native to Lake and Mendocino counties is the mountain quail. Hunters often use this constant chattering to locate the birds. If disturbed, they give an alarm call and after being scattered they will give an assembly call for the covey to regroup. They are constantly chirping and peeping while feeding. The average covey size for California quail is from 10-12 birds and they are considered the noisiest of all the quail. They are always found near water and will be found mainly in the lower foothills. The male takes only one female for the season and assists in raising the young. The average weight is approximately 6-7 ounces for both sexes. The female does have a plume but it is not as showy as the male’s. The female is primarily brown and the breast is scaled. His breast is scaled and his flanks are streaked with white.
